On Sunday, I really enjoyed watching the London marathon. Especially hearing the stories of people who have overcome some kind of struggle, to compete. I watched the TV programme 'Mind Over Marathon' which followed a group of people who have mental health issues, training for the marathon, and it struck a chord with me. I have suffered from depression throughout my life, and still struggle with severe claustrophobia, anxiety and panic attacks. It still feels a bit taboo to admit to such things. So I am glad there is now a campaign, supported by Prince Harry, to encourage people to talk about mental health. Exercise has always been known to lift the mood, and I have found walking has helped me a lot. I was so inspired by the London marathon runners, that I've decided to enter my very first ! I'm starting off gently, by attempting the Glastonbury Road run – 3k, taking place this Sunday 30th April. Having previously been extremely obese, until my life saving gastric bypass in 2013, I have never found exercise easy. Since the surgery I have some minor medical issues, which mean that even this relatively short distance will be a challenge. Even so, I'm hoping to raise money for The Royal British Legion. The legion do some amazing work in our local community, and have supported countless army veterans and their families. Our family have first hand experience of the fantastic work they do. My husband served in the Royal Signals regiment of the British Army, and has suffered with his own mental demons and PTSD. Our local branch of the RBL, have been a real support. If you'd like to support me and the charity- please go to this website and pledge your donation. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/HeatherBryson-Banks I will say a big thanks to everyone on my website and in my next column. Please come along to cheer on everyone in the Glastonbury Road Run this Sunday. There is a 10k, 5k, and the 3k race, plus a schools race and a 1 mile fun run. Loads of us will be running in fancy dress, and there's also Beltane & May Day celebrations in the town ! It certainly will be a fun day out. Later on, pop over to Shepton Mallet, as we celebrate a 'Festival of Dogs' up at Collett Park. You could have a wander down the High Street, to check out the new Domino's pizza shop, or Amigo's Mexican restaurant. The boys and I had a cheeky lunch in there last week, and tried on sombreros. Rowan, who is the fussiest eater ever, adored the cheesy nachos and decided he likes spicy salsa ! Weight loss update, for those who are following my diet story- Easter week, I had a small gain, but I'm back on track. Apparently chocolate eggs and cider have calories in them. Who knew!
