On Saturday 9th March, I gave my first "Finding Joy In The Jungle" SEND Parenting talk, as part of International Women'd Day event at The Art Bank , Shepton Mallet. Organised by Abby Young of Tall Tails Theatre Company, the event hosted a variety or speakers, campaigners and performers including Nicola Field who spoke about LGBTQ+ supporting the miners strikes, current campaigns against oppresion, and her art exhibition " Our Emotions Are Real", Eliza Wylie who got everyone signing and exploring the power of their voice and my friend Simone Cir Cir, who did an inspiring and empowering expresive feeform dance and belly dance about surviving domestic abuse.
I'd been quite nervous about doing my talk, and whether or not people would even be interested. I needn't have worried. I had a large , and very engagemed audience. Many of whom had come specifically for my talk! I had really wonderful feedback, though it was clear just how emotionally draining and isolating the experience of being a SEND parent can be- hence the need for my talk, and many more support groups. The parents in the audience really liked my resource sheet, and I have linked to it in the 'Resources' tab of this website. So feel free to have a look! Though the day was predominantly about celebrating women, I really must say a huge thank you to the wonderful man in my life, Tobias Daniels, who is my absolute rock. He supported me so strongly and gently, from a pre-talk massage to post-talk hugs, tea and cake. He makes everything I do in this world much more magical! 'Sister's are doing it for themselves'... but we must not forget to honour and respect the good men in our lives and in this world. Our male children, need great role models more than ever.
