Thank you everyone who sent messages of support to me after last weeks column.
Day by day I am starting to feel better, and have been getting out and about a little more. My first public outing was to the fantastic Festival Of Dogs, up at Collet Park in Shepton Mallet last weekend. The sun was shining, and there was an abundance of wet noses, waggy tails, and smiling faces. We took along our two very excited husky dogs, who got lots of fuss and cuddles and made lots of new friends. There were lots of fun dog shows, an agility course, birds of prey and reptile handlers, lots of delicious food stalls including the popular hog roas by Pigalicious and even a gorgeous vintage caravan, which had been upcycled into a dog bakery, selling homemade canine treats. The festival was also an opportunity for local charities and community groups to raise their profile. I spoke to Peter Bradshaw from Shepton Mallet Dementia Action Alliance , who told me about some upcoming sessions which are being run increase dementia awareness, and will aim to make Shepton a dementia friendly community. The talks are free and are on Thursday 21st June , 6pm at St. Cecilia Nursing home & Friday 22nd June , 12 noon at the library. My husband helped out the the Royal British Legion stall, where people were able to sponsor large poppies, to be displayed around the town in the build up to this years Remembrance Day. The Festival Of Dogs was much more than just about dogs, it brought our whole community together, it educated, inspired and entertained. Well done to everyone involved! If anyone is interested , my favourite dog was Teddy the fluffiest Chow Chow I’ve ever seen, from Norah Fry area apparently! Apart from attending a few events, and meetings, I also finally decided to get my hip & lower back sorted. Since doing the Glastonbury Road Run, I have not been walking or running and I know that exercise keeps my depression a bay. There was only one man for the job, Ben Gait from Mendip Chiropractic, on the High Street He’s worked miracles on my husband, and friends,yet I’ve been too scared to go. All that twisting and clicking scares the life out of me! Well I needn’t have worried. Ben’s calm, reassuring and friendly tone put me at ease. His knowledge and passion for his work is really inspiring. He explained everything to me simply, and having limped into his office, anxious and pained I walked out confident and tall. I’ll need more sessions, but I’m looking forward to that now. I do wish that proven holistic medical treatments like this, were available on the NHS. For things like back pain, all GP’s will do is dish out painkillers which don’t fix the problem only mask the pain. The sunshine is finally here, and I really need it. I’ve struggled with my mental health over the last couple of weeks, I’d been feeling fine then a bout of depression just hit me like a tonne of bricks and it was really scary. It seems no amount of yoga, green smoothies or essential oils can hold back the black dog when he comes howling. Though all of those this do help me alot usually. All I could do was submit to that awful feeling of hopelessness, and pray that others understood as I sent lots of apologetic emails and texts explaining why I was unable to fulfil my normal commitments. They say it’s ok to not be ok. And I had some very touching facebook messages when my status updates became worryingly morose. However, I still felt really guilty as I was unable to fulfil my role as mother, wife, daughter, volunteer, blogger or columnist- so it didn’t feel ok at all.
I didn’t get back to feeling normal straight away. I had to be kind to myself and take it easy. The warm weather and sunshine lifted my spirits and gradually the dark cloud began to pass. I’d signed up to do the Glastonbury Road Run again this year, and despite a painful hip- I was determined to complete my 3k challenge. I remember running it for the first time last year, I was so proud. In my mind, this year I would smash my personal best, be two stone lighter, and look like a professional athlete as I glided over the finish line to loud cheers. In reality, I’m about the same weight ( though less puffy thanks to ditching the booze) my hip popped about two minutes in to the race meaning I was overtaken by about twenty Millfield school kids and a toddler, it was 23c and in the end I hobbled my way round and just about managed a victory ‘limp run’ to the finish line. I had a lovely day though, it did my mental health the world of good. My husband and kids came to cheer me on, and afterwards we went home to enjoy the rest of our bank holiday weekend in the sunshine. We were smuggly prepared for the sizzling pre-summer temperatures with a pop up gazebo, sparkling clean bbq, self lighting coals and ofcourse the 6ft paddling pool. I sank onto my lounger, sunhat on, magazine in hand and elderflower fizz at the ready. I was living the dream for all of ten minutes. Next came the familiar cries of “Aaaah the water is freeeezing, there’s bugs in it, he splashed me in the eye!” from the kids, and “ Stupid thing’s gone too hot , the burgers are burning. I thought you’d done the dog poos, I almost stepped in one, where’s my blimming beer?” From my husband “ Then finally … “Can’t we just go indoors and play on our ipads?” Ah, the great British summer. A few years ago, I tried to launch a community radio station for Shepton Mallet and surrounding areas. For one reason or another it didn’t happen and I’m glad , because the timing just wasn’t right. However, a couple of months ago I was contacted by Nick Tolson, editor of The Shepton Shout magazine. He joined my facebook group, and wondered if we could give the station another go. Within weeks, we’d met with a core team of passionate locals who were either interested in the technical side of things, marketing, researching or presenting. We have trustees, initial funding in place, some equipment and even a studio - which will soon be officially opened by a mystery local celeb!
It’s hoped that the station will be a platform for debate and discussion around local issues, that it will showcase local musical and creative talent, and play a wide range of music. The core team are looking for lot’s more people to get involved. Martin Wells, one of the trustees has set up a direct email . Join the facebook group to find out more - search Shepton Mallet Community Radio. I’ve done radio for years, but it wasn’t what I really wanted to do! I did it as I felt I could hide behind the microphone. When I was younger I loved getting up on stage, and was in everything from amateur dramatics playing ‘sexy chicken’ Pertelote in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to Golde from Fiddler on the roof at drama school. But, the one thing I really wanted to do was comedy. Stand Up comedy. I was just too nervous! Despite my anxiety, I have finally signed up to a course with professional comic Jill Edwards, at Bath’s Komedia. I decided to dip my toes by going along to the acclaimed Travestees Comedy Club, held monthly at Tor Leisure in Glastonbury. My hubby and I laughed out loud from start to finish at Canadian Mark Watson, hilarious headliner Paul Caffrey, and the unsettlingly rude female comic Micky Overman. It was, however, the dashing dandy and host Troy Hawke - who made me wish I’d worn a Tenna Lady pad! He’s natural, charming, and worked the audience like a wet ball of clay on a potter’s lathe. Quote of the night, “That look you give someone , when they chuck a banana in your sidecar ” Perhaps you had to be there. Anyway, If I’m half as funny as him, I’ll be hilarious. Last week a crowd of emotional parents gathered at the market cross in Shepton Mallet. We exchanged tearful half smiles and nods, as we nervously awaited the wobbly stream of yellow, and pink fluffy bonnets to appear at the bottom of Town Street.
A myriad of tiny high vis jackets , bunny ears, paper eggs on bent straw hats and anxious toddlers , totter up the street towards us. Some little ones smile , giggle and wave as they spot their proud parents in the crowd. Others glance shyly at the ground and chew their cuffs. This is my Harry’s last Easter bonnet parade, as he’ll be moving up to St.Paul’s in September. It’s the same for all the Year 2’s and us mums are all aching inside, as we realise just how fast kids really do grow up! As I strain on tip toes to see him enthusiastically ‘sign’ the lyrics to crowd favourite ‘Spring Chicken’; my mind flashes back to the day of his birth. His shiny eyes, tiny upturned nose, new born hair smell, and weirdly hairy shoulders! That overwhelming sense of unconditional love I felt, and still feel every night when I creep in to watch him sleep - wrapped up in his pokemon duvet. That feeling , which only slightly subsides when he’s pushing his luck for more time on his Kindle Fire, or is strenuously denying painting the cat blue- despite hands covered in ink! I cannot actually believe this gets harder not easier, as other parents claim. Yet, during ‘Plant A little Seed’ my mind flashes forwards this time. I imagine my boys as teenagers, dressed in skinny jeans - maybe on hover boards? ( Hey I watch too much sci fi !) being upset over girlfriends, wanting to go out in the evenings, navigating the world of social media, maybe being offered drugs -oh my God. I have to stop. I’ll have a panic attack if I keep going. I’m going to ruin these last glorious moments of Harry’s last Easter parade, If I don’t get a grip. I squeeze Wayne’s hand. Laugh at the fact he’s helping my 73 year old mother balance on top of a pillar so she can see. And take a few deep breaths. Yes time does fly, and ofcourse my boys will grow up. But as parents, I feel we do our best. Ofcourse we aren’t perfect all the time. When I need time to write this column, I sometimes throw them a bag of crisps and tell them to watch another episode of ‘Teen Titans Are Go’ for example! But, they are loved, they are protected ,yet still encouraged to take some risks. They are listened to and encouraged to talk and express their feelings. Wayne has quit smoking and I have quit drinking- so we can lead by example. Wayne chose to become self employed so he can work hours which allow him to share school runs, and watch school plays. We have less money, but more time. And it’s so worth it. Had a bit of a mad day, and just decided to dip dye my hair pink . Then I really missed having my pose pierced, which I always has - throughout my teens and twenties. Is it a midlife crisis? Who knows, who cares! I couldn't have it pierced when I was a TV extra, nor when I was working as a lecturer, or student attendance mentor. But what's stopping me now I'm a cool, sober yummy mummy blogger? nothing..hurrah! Also I realised I am terrified of being seen as dull and boring, just cos I don't go out drinking anymore. I'm not, honestly! I mean, I haven't wanted to go out clubbing, since I decided to stat trying for a baby. Life after kids is a thrilling rollercoaster ride in itself- no drugs needed. I've always doe crazy wild things, and always had my own unique style - nothing has changed. It's just with two young kids, and a damaged liver- sometimes a night at home with a cup of tea and a tub of chocolate hobnobs is the most fun I need. Deal with it. I put so much pressure on myself to please others, and to try and 'be' a certain way - that I gave myself a mini breakdown on St.Patrick's day.I ended up in a ball on my bed, mascara tears staining my unicorn duvet cover. I felt like I could drink, I maybe wanted to drink, the whole of the rest of the world was probably drinking- we had guests and I possibly am more fun and entertaining when I'm pissed, I'm a better hosted when blotto? Or am I? Am I turning into a boring old maid? Do people still think I'm fun crazy and cool? After shouting, arguements, tears, cuddles, facebook messages, tea and chocolate- I finally calmed down. I realised my guests were fine. Most people were proud of me for going sober, and even a bit inspired. They mainly still saw me as fun and cool ( thats coming from other mum's over 30 so...how accurate that is , I cant say!) My husband loves me, my kids love me- my friends old and new love me. And at the end of the day - It's a waste of energy and good mascara to worry what other people think ! What I got bombarded with on Facebook - whilst struggling with my sobriety... yeh really helpful !Yeh, hilarious.Last weekend I did parkrun on Saturday morning, followed by an intense but fantastic 3 hour “Yoga for weight loss” workshop by Wendy Sugg at Bruton Yoga ( If you missed it, there will be a full day workshop on Sunday 15th April, check out www.brutonyoga.com for info) needless to say I was very glad to have a lie in, and be pampered by my boys on Mothering Sunday. They’d bought me a selection of goodies from The Fairy Godmother Shop, we had a lovely afternoon tea with my mum, and Wayne cooked me Sunday dinner. I soaked my aches and pains in a bubble bath, then snuggled in bed with our 8 year old alaskan husky, ex sled dog, Ulf. It was quite a special moment for us both. Of Course he’s Wayne’s dog mostly, having been his lead dog in Sweden, when Wayne was racing up to 40km a day in minus temperatures. He even saved Wayne’s life once when a blizzard blew snow drifts over a frozen river trail, and the team got lost. Ulf is sled dog royalty, with his bloodline going back to the famous Alaskan ‘Redington’ lineage- yet he has lived a hard, working dogs life. Living first in Germany, with a tough world class musher Steffan Falter, then racing and pulling heavy tourist sleds in Swedish Lapland when he came to our ‘Musherman Adventure’ kennels. He has always lived outside, and although he’s fathered at least 50 litters of pups, been wary of other dogs and people. After the traumatic four day journey by car from Sweden to the UK in 2014, it has taken him a while to adjust. And it is just heartwarming to finally see him pottering around the house, sometimes hopping up on the sofa for a cuddle, and finally getting in bed for an afternoon nap. Dog lovers will understand! EASTER ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA - Now for the parenting bit; I can’t quite believe it’s the easter holidays next week. As always though, there is plenty to do in this area. Shepton Mallet Collett Park’s Easter Eggstravaganza is on from 11-3pm on Saturday 31st March. There will be a free easter egg hunt, BBQ, and bouncy castle. Kilver Court garden’s will be open, and there are free Easter biscuits for visitors who check out the website before they visit. Cheddar Gorge Caves will hold a ‘Glow In the dark egg hunt” from 24th March - 8th April- entry is included with every explorer ticket ( priced £16.95 adults / £12.70 over 5’s - online) and Wookey Hole will transform into a magical Easter fairy kingdom from 25th March till 10th April ( £16.50 adults / £12.75 over 3’s online) .It’s worth exchanging your Tesco clubcard points for days out vouchers too, as they may be worth more than their cash value. If your child has a disability, don’t forget to contact Somerset County Council - Children with disability service, and apply for a free ‘Max’ card. This will give the child discounted entry to attractions nationwide. Last Sunday, I was lucky enough to be an audience member on BBC 1 live debate show “The Big Questions” presented by Nicky Campbell. It was filmed at Bath Spa University, and we had to arrive bright and early at 08.30 in preparation for going live at 10am. The topics under discussion; “Is Social Media beyond control? And should we presume consent for organ donation in England?” ( Watch it on BBC iplayer, episode 8, series 11 ) PAs a former Media lecturer, with a degree in Media & Communications, and as a keen user of social media, I had strong opinions on the first question.
I believe social media should ofcourse have privacy and security settings, in order to protect those who are more vulnerable- but it should not be censored or banned. I strongly believe we should be teaching media studies, including social media and internet safety to children from primary school age. It should be part of the national curriculum. Children are given computer tablets to play on, from as young as 2 or 3 years old- they are watching TV and movies, listening to music and seeing advertising around them from the minute they can focus their eyes, yet we don’t formally encourage debate or discussion around how these images and this information is processed, until secondary school. It is so important that children are encouraged to develop critical thinking, so they do not take things they see on main stream media or on social media platforms at face value. They must learn about media ownership and control, the history and development of media and social media internet companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter. They should consider the relationship between self esteem, self image and photo shopped selfies on instagram. Question the authenticity of search engine rankings, debate the use of bots, discuss the devastating effect of internet trolling and cyber bullying , and ofcourse understand the importance of e-safety. The online world is developing at a rate we can hardly comprehend. Last year we first became aware of the term fake news, now there is AI facial recognition software which can make it look as though anyone is saying anything. Voice recognition programmes like ‘Lyrebird’ which can do the same things for a person’s voice. In essence it would be possible for a semi skilled IT whizz to make a realistic video of Trump saying he’d just fired a nuke at Russia - and before we know it - WW3. It’s scary stuff, but not if we remain vigilanty self aware and inquisitive. Don’t believe everything to read, see or hear! I showed my kids “The Matrix” in order to spark a debate on Artificial Intelligence, the holographic universe theory and deep mind. In hindsight , it was beyond them aged 6 & 8. Harry was sad that so many watermellons got splatted needlessly in the street shooting scene, and Rowan said it inspired him to make a movie about nits living on someone’s head. I’ll try again when theyre older! Mum’s, dad’s and grandparents across Somerset, will be happy to reach the home stretch of the half term hols. The weather hasn’t been great, and even the best parents in the world will be feeling a little bit frazzled by now! I recommend a bit of pampering once the little darlings have gone back to school. Even if you are working full time, a nice long soak in the bath, reading your favourite book, or laughing out loud to your fave comedy boxset- can be a great way to unwind. If you want to go a step further, then I can seriously recommend having a professional massage to work out those stress induced aches and pains. Former Whitstone’s pupil Becky Stokes has opened ‘Becky Beauty’ at 7, Commercial Road- and she’s offering everything from pedicures, facials, and full body massages to state of the art microblading sessions , and great prices. I treated myself to a hot ‘Lava Shell’ massage, to celebrate my six month ‘Soberversary’ last week. The salon is small, but bright and airy. She’s originally a northern lass, and has a friendly approachable demeanor and witty banter which made me really warm to her. Becky explained that actual Lava shells were used in the Phillipines for centuries, and now the beauty industry are hailing them as the ‘new hot stones’. I’ve only been to two sessions, run by Wendy Sugg of ‘Bruton Yoga’, but I swear I am feeling more flexible, and even taller. I can now reach the top latch on my garden gate, sounds bizarre but it’s true! Part of the sessions involve deep relaxation, and that is helping tremendously with my anxiety. I met an elderly lady in a charity shop last week who told me she’d taught it for ten years, and that she is the most flexible person in her kettlebell class. She then stood up, arched over to touch her toes , bent her head to her knees- and then revealed she was 79 years old ! I was gobsmacked, and vowed then and there to follow her example #lifegoals . Welcome to what the millenials will hashtag #FeelGoodFeb ! Gone are the dreary dark January days, this is the month where you reap the rewards of your new year’s resolutions and start to see some results.
If you gave up booze for ‘dry january’ you’ll no doubt have already lost some weight, and saved some money - carry on and you’ll start to find anxiety and depression starting to lift, skin and hair looking healthier, and a new found zest for life. I’m living proof! Those of you who are giving up cigarettes, caffeine , sugar and other addictive vices- may still find that cravings are a problem, and might have been fighting of colds, flus and bugs as your immune systems struggled to cope. He’s fabulous, and had my friend and I in stitches with his humour, before sending us off with intuitively blended healing essential oils. I’ve since been into the shop , bought myself a ‘Serenity’ mist and booked a massage. I’m hooked! Tickets actually sold out, I'm so glad I ordered mine before Christmas- I knew I'd need a pick me up in the new year. I didn't really know what to expect, but It was a fabulous informative evening - where about ten local health & wellness companies- explained what they do in a short talk, then let guests sign up to 15 minute taster sessions. I didn't want to overwhelm myself - so I chose ones I'd been dying to try- and grabbed leaflets and business card off the others. My first session was an INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE with Mobile Massage Therapist Sara House. She did some wonderful deep tissue massage and pressure point stimulation on my shoulders, neck and head- It was heavenly. Despite being in a busy room, I felt like I'd floated up to the clouds, and literally felt the stress and tension in my head and shoulders melt away. It felt like she was popping bubble wrap, as she worked away those kinks and knots. Amazing, and highly recommended. She can do it with hr portable massage table, and you lying down- or just sat in a comfy chair. It can help with headaches, digestive problems, sciatic pain, eczema and all kinds of allergies. It looks at a mixture of things from emotional underlying issues, posture, to diet and nutrition. It takes a few full sessions to see the benefits, but even from a quick 15 minute taster, Paula was able to pin point a few issues in my diet - and that I drink no where near enough water which exasopates my back pain ! She also said I should give up coffee, but I ignored that bit. Going sober is quite enough for now ! lol She has decades of health, care and healing experience, and a warm and open manner. It can include light pressure massage and manipulation. Catherine was quick to spot that I stood with my knees locked back, which is quite common , but is terrible for your lower back! My shoulders and arms were very tight, and after a short massage I was able to get much more movement in the motion of my left arm- which had been troubling me. Again, it's something which you'd need to have a proper consultation and a few sessions to get the full benefits. During January & February - Catherine is offering £5 a treatment , so it'll cost you just £35. My friend, Simone was also at the event. She is a spiritual healer, who works with spirits and guardian angels to heal not only people but also animals. Before we left, both of us had to go and chat to Paul Mercer, who has rcently opened up a shop in the centre of Shepton Mallet called 'Intentions'. At the moment, the aromatherapy shop ( in the market square) is open on market days, but Paul also arranges out of hours events - and does alot of work online. We picked up a couple of complimentary essential oils, and I promised to pop in on friday to check out his myriad of mystical and healing blends, gels and sprays. I really want to try the 'Serenity Mist' which was created to help people recovering from addictions, there is also a lavender based 'Sleep Mist' which I can't wait to try.
